How to choose a phone or tablet stand
Six weeks of testing five stands taught us that almost every buying mistake in this category comes down to three things: the wrong room, too many joints, and a base that is too small.
Match the stand to the room

Six checks before you buy
1. Decide where it lives
A stand for one desk and a stand that moves between rooms are different products. Portability is the single biggest predictor of whether a second and third stand get used, because a stand in a drawer is a stand you do not own.
2. Check the device list, including the case
Manufacturer specs quote bare device widths. Add a rugged case and a 6.8in phone can stop fitting a narrow cradle. Flexible slot designs are far more forgiving here than clamps.
3. Count the joints
Every hinge and ratchet is a future failure point. If a stand has two, it has two things that can sag. Hinge-free designs give up some angle range in exchange for not degrading.
4. Test stability the same way we do
Dock the device, tap the screen twenty times as if typing, and count movements. Zero is the only acceptable score on a dry, flat surface.
5. Check the charging path
Look for a cable channel or an open bottom edge in both orientations. A stand you have to undock to charge is a stand you will undock and leave undocked.
6. Price it per year, not per unit
A $10 stand replaced twice a year costs more than a bundle that lasts. Judge on expected life, and on how many rooms one purchase covers.
