How to Set Up a Hands-Free Kitchen Recipe Station

The right place for a recipe screen is out of the splash zone, out of the knife zone, and inside your natural line of sight when you stand at your main prep surface. In most kitchens that is the back third of the counter, offset to your non-dominant side.

Stand where you actually chop and look straight ahead. Whatever surface your eyes land on is where the device belongs. If that spot is currently occupied by a knife block or a fruit bowl, move them — the geometry matters more than the furniture.

You are not reading the screen continuously; you are glancing at it between actions. Glance-reading needs larger effective text and a steeper tilt than desk reading, because you are looking from further away and from above.

Lift the device off the counter and tilt it back towards your face. In practice, any stand that raises a phone a few centimetres and holds a 20-30 degree tilt turns a squint into a glance. Increase the system font size while you are at it; recipes are the one context where nobody minds large type.

The reason people smear sauce on their phones is that a flat phone has to be picked up to be read. A stand at a readable angle removes most touches, and the remaining ones can be handled with a knuckle.

Set the display timeout longer, or use the recipe app's keep-awake mode, so you are not unlocking with wet hands. If the device charges while it sits, run the cable permanently to that spot and leave it there — a charging stand you have to plug in is a stand that ends up flat on the counter.

Anything on a kitchen counter will eventually meet water, oil and flour. That rules out fabric, unsealed wood and any mechanism with exposed teeth or joints that you cannot wipe out.

One-piece stands with a wipeable body are the pragmatic choice. Take thirty seconds after cooking to wipe both the stand and the device back, and the whole station stays hygienic rather than becoming the grimiest object in the room.

Leave the stand permanently in place. The single biggest predictor of whether a kitchen setup gets used is whether it requires setting up. If the stand lives in a drawer, the phone lives flat on the counter.

Buying a second stand for the kitchen sounds indulgent until you compare it to the price of a screen repair or a replacement device that met a wet counter edge.
