The physics of a tilted head
An adult head weighs roughly 4.5 to 5.5 kg. Held directly over the shoulders it is a well-balanced load that the cervical spine handles all day without complaint. Tilt it forward, and the effective load on the neck extensors climbs steeply, because the head is now a weight on the end of a lever. Published biomechanical modelling puts the effective load in the region of three to five times body weight of the head at the sort of angles people adopt while reading a phone in their lap.
You do not need to memorise the numbers. The practical point is simple: the further your screen sits below eye level, the harder a group of small muscles at the back of your neck has to work, and the longer you hold that position, the more likely those muscles are to complain at the end of the day.
This is why the same person can scroll for twenty minutes with no symptoms and feel stiff after two hours of the same posture. The position is not injurious in itself. The duration is what turns it into a problem.
What people actually do with their devices
Watch anyone cook from a recipe on a phone. The phone lies flat on the counter, they lean over it, they read four words, they straighten up, they chop, they lean back over. That cycle repeats fifty times in a meal, and every repetition is a deep forward flexion of the neck.
Video calls produce a different fault. A laptop or phone below eye line means you spend the call looking down, which is both uncomfortable and, incidentally, an unflattering camera angle. Propping a device on a stack of books solves the height and creates a new problem: the stack is unstable and you end up guarding it.
Bed and sofa use is the hardest to fix because the furniture, not the device, dictates the posture. A stand helps here only if it can sit on a side table at a usable height and hold a strong angle.
The positions that reduce load
Aim to bring the top third of the screen close to eye level when you are seated. For a counter or a desk this usually means lifting the device 8 to 15 cm and tilting it back by 15 to 30 degrees, which is exactly the range that most well-designed stands provide.
Angle matters as much as height. A screen raised but left flat still forces you to look down at it. A screen tilted back towards your face lets you read with your eyes rather than your neck, which is the entire mechanism by which a good stand helps.
Change position often. No single posture is safe indefinitely — the best ergonomic intervention is the next posture. A stand that is easy to reposition gets repositioned, and a stand that requires you to fight two hinges stays exactly where it is.
What a stand cannot do
A stand will not fix a sedentary day, a badly set-up chair, or a monitor that is 20 cm too low. It also will not treat existing pain — persistent neck pain, numbness or pain radiating into an arm are reasons to see a clinician, not reasons to buy an accessory.
What a stand does very well is remove one specific, repeated, entirely avoidable posture: the deep forward tilt over a flat device. That is a small win, repeated dozens of times a day, and small repeated wins are how ergonomics actually works.
Choosing for the room you are in
Kitchens punish hinges and reward stability and easy cleaning. Desks reward height and adjustability. Cars and bags reward small, solid objects with no moving parts. Most people buy a desk stand, discover they want one in the kitchen, and end up with two.
If you only buy one, buy the one that works in more than one room. Portability is not a luxury feature here — it is the difference between using the stand every day and using it in one place while your phone still lies flat everywhere else.
